Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which usually attacks the lungs, but can invade any part of the body including the kidney, spine and brain. Today, there are more than 10 million new TB cases each year and the disease is responsible for more than 1.6 million deaths annually, making it the world’s top infectious disease killer. Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) is a public health crisis and a health security threat.
